So, what you gonna do? -  What you gonna do? What are you gonna do?
Don't know. Might go home for the weekend.
Well, there's no place like it. Might not come back.
Are you going back? Is that nice? -
Yeah. - I'm puttin' the "fun" back in fundament.

"For now though, I’m going to relish the future’s blurry vista.
Maybe there is no better tool for revealing the contingent nature of boundaries than astigmatism.
We should roll with it, internalize it, embody it."

And the heat in here is something fierce and I swear it's making us see double
We woke up today and I thought I was yesterday
Summer months keep rolling by and we'd like to try to finish it by wintertime
What once was a monster is now a friend of mine

Chair: Ro, Jaime Hayon, 2013
vs
Sculpture: Vincent Fecteau

1. "World-renowned Spanish designer Jaime Hayon has worked together with Republic of Fritz Hansen™ to create today's answer to tomorrow's easy chair. The extra-wide Ro™ chair has a shell with exaggerated wings, allowing for privacy and a soft place to rest your head. Ro™, meaning "tranquility" in Danish, comes in nine unique designer selections with a mix of two tone-on-tone fabrics : one fabric for the shell and another for the cushions. The result creates a contrasted expression between the hard shell and the warm, soft interior. "

2.  "Vincent Fecteau is known for carefully handcrafting modestly-sized sculptures from everyday materials such as rubber bands, paper clips, seashells, and string, often incorporating these things into papier-mâché or foamcore structures.  With their incongruous forms, unnerving color schemes and various other unsettling elements, Fecteau's meticulously made sculptures belie the many formal decisions made by the artist in completing each work. He has said of his working process, "I like to work on a group of pieces all at the same time, spending long periods just staring at things and trying to activate or access a feeling that somehow relates to what I'm trying to make. …When I'm open to things but not fixed on an objective is when I'm most likely to discover a connection that helps a piece feel more resolved."  Vincent Fecteau was born in 1969. His work was featured in the 2002 Whitney Biennial, was included in the group show "Bay Area Now" at the Center for the Arts at Yerba Buena Gardens, San Francisco in 1997, and has been exhibited in museums and galleries throughout Europe and the United States, including a one-person show at the Art Institute of Chicago in 2008, which was curated by James Rondeau. He currently lives and works in San Francisco.

But I’m not looking for an easy way out.
This whole life it’s been about
try and try and try
and try and try and try
to be simple again. - Jason Molina

The haunting words of late singer Jason Molina, Songs Ohia and Magnolia Electric Co. still echo on the stero speakers and gain momentum as time fights forward. He was an exceptional talent - a musician, a poet, and vocalist that lost his life too early to alcoholism at 39 years old.   This afternoon on the way home from a meeting near the Pacific Ocean, my windows rolled down; I found myself gazing into the sea as my car headed south, back into town.  Keep your eyes on the road, dear ones. The path is often hiding, keep your eyes on the road, dear ones. We will eventually make it to the sea. - David John

Cold was sharp across the high desert
You and me in the secrets
Once it must have been not only my heart on the rail
once it must have been no hand was at the wheel that
no hand was at the wheel. -

Maria Pergay's "Secret Garden"

"Now I have been slightly shy, & I can smell a pinch of hope,
to almost have allowed once fingers to stroke. The fingers I was given to touch with.

But careful, careful.  There lies my passion, hidden.
There lies my love, I'll hide it under a blanket, Lull it to sleep" (here)

Pouf Ruban / Ribbon Pouf Bronze, 2007 Bronze tinted stainless steel

Last month while in New York, I was eager to see the latest works of Maria Pergay.  Her show, "The Secret Garden" was on display at a 2nd floor decorative arts gallery in Chelsea, Demisch Danant. For this show, Pergay created a garden of carefully crafted delicate and brutal forms in copper and steel resting heavily on top of raw planks of pine wood.   Hundreds of beautiful copper leaves reflected a manic New York skyline, and minimal steel consoles were ripped open to show a world bustling with life, as if to allude to new beginnings.  There is a tender and delicate hand to these works that is balanced by the blatant materiality of steel Pergay has chosen to obsess over.  I imagine where these furniture works will venture to next, to a collector who will rests on Pergay's fabulously sensual Ribbon Pouf 2007, gazing into voids, and feeling the warmth, or the chill of stainless steel.

At 82 years of age, Maria Pergay continues to create these forms, as if to tell a personal story of an artist's escape, through works of furniture and forms.  A dedication to steel, a fascination with making steel become soft, sinous, and alluring.

These are works that begged to be touched.  But only briefly. - David John

"The Designers Are In: LA Style, Artisan Edition"
 DISC Interiors featured on Remodelista

Last weekend, Remodelista asked DISC Interiors to be a part of "The Designer Is In" series where they feature a designer/architect for the weekend, allowing readers to write in questions.  We had a blast answering emails all weekend, and we were blown away at the positivity towards this project!  We are still receiving emails, and are grateful to Remodelista for asking us to be part of their site. - David John

"The designers retained the ceiling pendant, which was original to the house, and mixed in a midcentury dining set by Guillerme and Chambron for Votre Maison along with a custom leather wall mirror by LA lighting designer and artist Jason Koharik." - Remodelista

"We had worked with Todosomething on a previous DISC project, and we were eager to ask them to work with us on Glenn's home. Todosomething, (Dakota Witzenburg and Chad Petersen) build custom furniture and cabinetry here in Los Angeles. We designed the cabinetry to have a sense of timelessness about them, inspired by the lines of traditional English cabinetry. The island was designed with a 3" oak butcher block that can be used everyday, and will only get more beautiful over the years as the wood gains more textures and depth. Todosomething created an oak "jewel-box" interior for the cabinets with the glass doors, adding another material and texture. We decided early on with Glenn that the cabinetry would extend to the ceiling, giving a smaller kitchen a sense of vertical expanse, making it feel larger than it actually is, and giving extra storage." - David John

"The master bathroom turned out better than we could have imagined. On our first visit to Glenn's home, he showed us an area underneath the kitchen with dirt flooring that housed some of the plumbing for the home, which he desired to use for the future master bathroom. He had already contacted an architect as to how to build out this space, but he wanted a vision for the room. For the vanity, we looked to the lines and materials of Belgian cabinetry design. The custom vanity was made to be a piece of furniture, as to work with the hand-crafted feel of the home and the furnishings. It was constructed from white oak, the footing and towel rack are unlaquered brass. The master bathroom really has this feeling of an Italian Guest suite, with its custom oak cabinetry, brass and marble enclosed steam shower, and "Henry" plumbing fixtures from Waterworks."

"Our inspiration for the painted interior of the cabinet was from a couple of interior photos that we had all seen and loved, by designers Steven Volpe in San Francisco, and Steven Gambrel. Adding a deeper color worked to bring a sense of richness to the room, which is actually quite small. The shelves become a modernist work of art in themselves, creating space for Glenn's collection of design books, sculptures, and ceramic collection. In front of the built-in is a vintage chair from Mira Nakashima, George Nakshima's daughter."
